The Inconel family of superalloys are austenitic nickel-chromium based materials. Inconel alloys are oxidation and corrosion resistant, well suited for use in extreme environments subjected to pressure and heat. Inconel forms a thick, stable, passivating oxide layer when heated which protects the surface from further attack. These alloys retain strength over a wide temperature range, making them extremely useful for high temperature applications where aluminum and steel would succumb to creep as a result of thermally induced crystal vacancies..
